Hello, Cape Town!
Or...aaaaggghh! WTH is this traffic?!
6/23/17
We made it to our little apartment in the middle of downtown Cape Town, and it is very nice and secure with a stunning view of the city and Table Mountain - just as advertised. But OMG the traffic caught me off guard after all the easy, peaceful driving we have been doing. We just suddenly found ourselves in a crazy-busy city with a bunch of one-way streets and our navigation app couldn't quite keep up with where we were. At one point we made a detour through the city bus station in the middle of all the buses - people looked at us like we were from some other planet. Baylie advised me, "Don't look lost! Just look like you know where you're going!" Generally very sound travel safety advice...but in this situation I'm pretty sure it was obvious to every person that we were not in the middle of the sea of buses on purpose! We are definitely in the middle of vibrant neighborhood with a lot to offer, but all of that will have to wait until tomorrow.
We made a nice lunch stop about 3 hours into our drive in a town called Hermanus. They are known for having amazing whale watching from the shore. We didn't get to do the whale watching boat ride in Mossel Bay because of bad weather, so we thought we might see a few whales off shore in Hermanus. No luck, but lunch was great. We sat at an outside patio restaurant even though it was pretty cold; the waitress brought us blankets so we could bundle up The waves were beautiful!
