Our first attempt to see Istanbul

Successful, but I think it will take a few more tries to master this city!

The wonderful lady we are renting from let us go with her this afternoon when she traveled into the city to pick up her children from school. I'm not sure we ever would have been able to navigate the transportation system without her! We walked quite a long and twisty way to catch a city bus which took us to the ferry dock. We got on a ferry to cross the Bosphorous which let us off in chaos and traffic. She pointed us in the direction of the Grand Bazaar and off we went. (Reading that, I realize that I just can't capture the foreign feeling and disorientation of this city! But just know that even after all of our city wanderings this one is the most challenging so far.) We loved the Bazaar and feel like we only saw a fraction of it. The antiques section was the best part. (I saw so many things that made me think of Sissa, they just looked like cool old things she would want in her house). We also walked through the underground Cistern. It was an eerie and beautiful ruin.

Oh, I LOVE the look with your head scarf!! Very cool...and exotic! xoxo

by Mom

I agree with your mom - I think you look beautiful and totally at peace with the world in that scarf. The kids love the pictures. Kellen is nagging me to print out the pictures of the Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque, because they're still deep in the study of the Ottoman Empire. I assume you'll try to get back to the Bazaar again, but are there things to do or places to relax around your apartment? And, have you found the "turkish delights" yet??? My friend, who traveled to Turkey this summer, let me try hers and they are yummy! (Remember they're in the Narnia movies - the evil queen feeds them to Edward) She says you can only find them in Turkey. They're sweet gummy squares of yumminess with a touch of heat. Find them:)

Kathy, we will be going into the Hagia Sofia tomorrow. I'll take a few more pics for Kellen! Turkish delights are everywhere and come in a million flavors. The few we have tried so far were definitely not so magical. We'll keep looking!

Istanbul looks beautiful and definitely steeped in mystique. I have a feeling if I made it to the Grand Bazaar I never would see the rest of the city! Can't wait to see more pictures. What an adventure!!! Love you guys! xoxo

by Sissa

Sissa, Baylie and I spent a long time looking at antique jewelry and these rings with huge stones and intricate designs. We kept trying to pick out the "one most likely to have magical powers".

I agree totally with Sheri's comment on Istanbul is Gigantic. A book, movie or TV show should be in the future of the Pelhams. Your Mom is laying the groundwork with her scrapbooking. All the three of you will have to do is stay gorgeous. Love ya'
